"We know that teachers are the key to good child care - and as long as teachers are undervalued, American children, too, will keep getting less than they deserve"

You picked some very good choices in your Pioneers in the Early Childhood Education Field. Marcy Whitebook, Ph.D is a valuable asset to those of us in this field. It has always amazed me how little the salary is for those working in the early childhood field. As a teacher working in public education, my income was just over the poverty line. It was startleing and sad to me that I had friends who were working at Costco and the Hilton and their incomes were higher than mine. Yet, I had struggled as a single mom to get through college only to be paid enough to qualify for food stamps if I so chose.
ReplyDeleteRecently, I read where the average new teacher stays in the field 3-5 years. Hopefully, those like Marcy Whitebook, Ph.D can work to improve these working conditions. Not only for us but the children as well.......
Your quote from Janet Gonzalez-Mena is one of her most famous quotes...and for good reason. I read an article of hers in Exchange Magazine last year where she reminisces about how her mother used to always say "let's just be happy". So, Janet learned quickly to fake her happiness in order to avoid her mother getting upset. The quote you posted reminds me of that. I have learned over the years that it's okay to be a little crabby or sad...even when working with children. (Just never inappropriate!) Like we always say, it's through modeling that children learn so much. And if we model authenticity, they will learn it as well!
